When to Use Topsoil vs Garden Mix

When to Use Topsoil vs Garden Mix - Soil Kings - Bulk Landscape Supplies Calgary

One question we hear a lot from both homeowners and landscapers who are just getting started in the business is: should I use screened topsoil or a garden mix? This is a really good question, and there isn’t an obvious answer — which is probably why so many people ask. To get started, it’s a good idea to know the difference between screened loam and soil blends.

Screened Topsoil

Taken from our topsoil stockpile, Soil Kings screens all of our own loam inhouse using an ultrafine 1/2″ (12 mm) screen. We’re proud to say that we offer the tightest screened soil in Calgary, as our competitors use larger 5/8″ screens.

Our screened topsoil is the highest quality loam available to Calgarians. And you don’t have to take our word for it! We’re happy to provide potential clients with soil tests to prove just how fertile our soils are. We pride ourselves on offering only the best soil which is easy to work with as most soil clumps, rocks, and roots have been screened away. Our screened loam is a bargain at $12 per cubic yard, and it’s perfect for lawns and gardens.

Garden Mixes

Our garden soil blends are mixed inhouse using our famous screened topsoil and superior quality soil amendments. Our basic 7030 garden mix adds our top quality compost to our screened topsoil, while our KINGS Premium garden mix is a 50:50 mix of screen topsoil and soil amendments, including our aged compost and fine mulch, for extra water retention and workability.

After blending the soil with amendments, we screen our garden mixes again to ensure the best workability and quality possible. Our basic 70/30 garden mix is only $40 per cubic yard, and our KINGS Premium garden mix is a steal at $50 per cubic yard.

Our garden mixes are extremely rich in nutrients and are ideal for creating new planting gardens or for reviving and replenishing existing garden areas. Landscapers can take advantage of these excellent soil blends when planting new trees and shrubs for clients. Additionally, the 7030 garden mix is a great option when top dressing a lawn.

When it comes to choosing between topsoil or garden mix for your clients, it’s really a question of budget and purpose. Our screen topsoil is affordable, easy to work with, and excellent for creating lawns and gardens for your clients. Our garden mixes build on our top quality screened loam by adding nutrient rich compost and mulch. These soil blends should be used anywhere new plants may need some extra help to thrive.
