How Much Topsoil Do I Need? Calculation Explained

When starting a new garden bed, laying sod, or filling raised planters, one of the first questions people ask is: how much topsoil do I need? Ordering the right amount is important. Too little, and you won’t have enough coverage for healthy root growth. Too much, and you’ll overspend and be left with piles of unused soil. With a few simple calculations, you can estimate your needs accurately and save yourself time, money, and frustration.

Why Topsoil Matters

Topsoil is the uppermost layer of soil where most of a plant’s roots grow. It’s rich in nutrients and organic matter, making it the foundation for healthy gardens, lawns, and flower beds. Adding bulk topsoil creates the right environment for plants to develop strong root systems and ensures even water retention across your space. Without enough topsoil, roots may sit too shallow, plants may dry out quickly, or growth may become uneven.

The Basic Formula for Topsoil

To calculate how much topsoil you need, you’ll need three pieces of information:

• The length of the area
• The width of the area
• The depth of topsoil required

The formula is:
Length × Width × Depth = Volume of soil needed

Since topsoil is usually sold by the cubic yard, you’ll then convert your measurement into cubic yards. One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet (3 feet × 3 feet × 3 feet).

For example, if your garden bed is 10 feet long and 12 feet wide, and you want 6 inches (0.5 feet) of topsoil, the calculation is:
10 × 12 × 0.5 = 60 cubic feet.
Divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards: 60 ÷ 27 = 2.22 cubic yards.

In this case, you’d need about 2.5 cubic yards of topsoil to get the coverage you want.

How Deep Should Topsoil Be?

The amount of topsoil you need depends largely on the type of project you’re working on. For new lawns, a layer of about 4 to 6 inches provides the best foundation for healthy grass roots to take hold. This depth ensures the roots can grow deep enough to access water and nutrients while still allowing for good drainage.

Garden beds require a bit more. For vegetables, perennials, and other flowering plants, aim for 8 to 12 inches of topsoil. This depth supports stronger root systems, helps plants access nutrients more efficiently, and improves overall soil fertility. Raised beds and planters, on the other hand, should be filled to their full depth, typically between 12 and 18 inches, to give plants the room they need for healthy, unrestricted growth.

If you’re improving an existing lawn with a top dressing, much less soil is needed. A thin layer of about ¼ to ½ inch spread evenly across the grass is usually enough to enrich the soil and promote healthier turf without suffocating the lawn. In all cases, it’s wise to order slightly more than your exact calculation, since soil tends to settle and compact over time. Having a little extra ensures complete coverage and consistent results.
